Riders are responsible for the safe operation of their own bikes & carrying of appropriate tools and spares. Other riders may on occasion share their tools/spares/expertise with other riders, but no rider should rely on this being the case & should be as self-sufficient as possible.
Type of bike & safety
For all our rides, any type of bike will be suitable, as long as it is roadworthy. However, a road bike or tourer or even a hybrid would be the most suitable. We also have no issue with anyone wanting to use an electric bike (ideally with battery fully charged to ensure no capacity issue during the ride) – it’s a great way to continue getting all the benefits of cycling when fitness levels fall off and/or the years catch up on you!
There is no regulation regarding protective helmets or special clothing, but you may want to consider wearing them for your own safety. A good pair of padded shorts (the pad is called a chamois) will probably make the ride much more comfortable & avoid unnecessary chaffing of delicate areas.
Lights & mudguards will be needed during the winter months.
Mudguards are required when the roads are wet & are advisable during the winter months. If you do not have mudguards & it is wet, then it is good etiquette for you to ride at the back of the group to avoid spraying other riders.
