Outward: Castle Walk, Coton Hill, Baschurch, Stanwardine – banana, Hordley, Welsh Frankton, St Martins, Pont-y-Blew, Chirk – Cafe Wylfa – lunch
Return: Weston Rhyn, Hengoed, Derwen, Whittington, Queen’s Head, Eardiston, Wykey, Ruyton XI Towns – possible pint, L Ness, Montford Br, Shelton – disperse
Distance ASDA to Shelton 50 miles w 2000 feet of ascent, ie “undulating plus”, but with three significant ascents up to W Frankton, from Pont-y-Blew to Chirk and up to Weston Rhyn
Usual generic risk assessment provisions apply, with the following specific comments:
Busier / faster roads – Berwick Road to Baschurch, Derwen to Queen’s Hd and from Montford Br – split into tight groups of 4s, 5s or 6s – minimum of 100m between groups
Right turns at difficult junctions – at Coton Hill traffic lights, off A495 at Welsh Frankton and onto B5009 at Derwen – plus across awkward crossroads in Chirk – all within speed limits but particular care and awareness still required
Hazardous sections – v steep ramp over canal bridge at Lower Frankton – AG to go first and signal if clear – broken loose surfaces particularly after W Frankton – steep with tight turns down from St Martins – allow fellow riders plenty of room
